Translation Process
Quality-assurance process
I have been delivering consistently high-quality translations for two decades. Quality is non-negotiable and I am able to offer such quality thanks to my skills, experience and process. You can read more about my skills and experience here. This section describes my quality-assurance process.
Review of Materials
First, I carefully review the client’s request, source documents and any instructions or materials provided (translation memories, glossaries, style guides etc.). I then ask for clarifications as needed. If I am certain that I can complete the translation request to a high standard and within the deadline requested, only then will I let the client know that I’m ready to take on the project.
Translation
Then I start translating the documents using the tools and methods appropriate for the project. My preferred tool is SDL Trados Studio, the industry-standard computer-assisted translation software. If I spot any source text errors (e.g. spelling or syntax errors), I make a note and inform the client. Also, if I notice that any parts of the source text are poorly worded and this results in a poor translation, I also let the client know. I will naturally inform the client of any other problems with the translation which affect the end result.
Quality Control
After I have finished the translation, I perform quality control using the appropriate computer-assisted translation tools. Computers are very good at picking up minor inconsistencies and simple errors that even the most experienced human eyes may sometimes miss.
Revision and proofreading
Proofreading is the final step. I always proofread my translations. This is a time-consuming but very important step that all professional translators are expected to include in their process. Proofreading allows a translator to check for spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax or formatting errors; also, to ensure that the terminology is consistent and that any appropriate style guides have been followed; and, finally, to make sure that the language of the document is natural and feels as if it were drafted in that language originally.
If the client requests a second reviewer, as recommended in certain international translation standards, this service is available at extra cost.
Delivery
Files are delivered according to the client instructions and in the format(s) specified.
After delivery, I remain available to discuss with the client any questions or additional requests (e.g. producing alternative translation text to fit a specific template).
